These bright flavors are handsomely balanced by the wine’s subtle minerality and its bracing acidity. Refreshing and crisp, this wine is a perfect companion for those warm summer days ...

Chardonnay, Wild Boy, Santa Maria £35.95
No it’s not a very subtle label but then it is made in California by Jim Clenendon of the famous Au Bon Climat estate, and that’s what he actually looks like—although without the purple streaks. It’s made in a deliberately opulent style, yet the nose is surprisingly restrained, and the wine has a lovely weight. The palate is has lots of citrus flavours and the oak comes through in the lovely brioche flavours. Everybody seems to know someone who they think looks like him!

Sauvignon Blanc,La Flor, Mendoza £23.95
La Flor is a wonderful Sauvignon from Pulenta, crisp and aromatic and with an exemplary texture, as far from the cooked sweaty aromas sometimes associated with South American Sauvignon as it is possible to be. The 2011 has crisp but not tart acidity and is complex and leafy, with asparagus and citric notes on the palate.

Picpoul De Pinet, Felines Jourdan, Languedoc £23.95
The Basin De Thau is located to the South-West of Montpellier, on the road to Béziers. The etymology of the grape variety gives a clue to the style; ‘pique’ implying the crispness and firmness, ‘poule’, rather more tangentially, hinting at soft and maternal qualities. This Mediterranean appellation, with its beautiful countryside and fantastic wild-life has forged a strong reputation for this variety, in some ways similar to the Albarino in Galicia.

The inner sweetness and perfume weave through effortlessly to a round, inviting finish. Jim Clendenen is one of the pioneers of the Central Coast. At their best, his wines capture striking expressions of some of the region’s top sites deeply influenced by a huge passion and admiration for the great wines of Burgundy.

Malbec, Santa Celina, Mendoza £26.95

Deep ruby red in colour with purple tints. On the nose the wine is vibrant and intense with aromas of red berries, cherries, raspberry and a touch of dark chocolate due to its oak ageing. On the palate it is fresh with flavours of blackberry and mulberry with touches of spice and black pepper. Well structured with soft, rounded tannins and a long finish.

Malbec, Pulenta Estate, Mendoza £37.95
Malbec in youth is rich and almost too powerful, marrying Indian spices, liqueur de cassis and notes that remind one of dried fruits that have been macerated. All framed in a natural and entirely seductive sweetness, needless to say. Pulenta’s success resides in the fact that all this has been harnessed, but then enhanced by careful ageing and a judicious use of new oak.

Gran Corte, Pulenta Estate, Mendoza £43.95
The Holy Grail of vinous sophistication is undoubtedly the Bordeaux blend. The Gran Corte employs all but Cabernet Franc from the Bordelais canon and the result is stunning. The precise blend is 37% Malbec, 27% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc, aged for a year in 100% new French oak.. With a deep plum-red colour, a richly expressive nose which marries spice and cherry, and a structured and sophisticated palate, with black cherry, mocha and blackcurrant coming through, this is a great success. Of Cru Classé quality, but with an additional touch of Latin warmth

MANY OTHERS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE WINE ROOM Spain

Tempranillo, Avaniel, Ribera Del Duero £23.95
This unoaked Joven wine is made from 100% Tempranillo and has good weight and plenty of savoury character to underpin the spicy black fruit. Hints of licorice, bay and chocolate complete the picture pleasingly and belie the wine’s nominal standing as the most junior member of this dynamic family.
